Porirua City Council invites residents to share their views on local government amalgamation

Porirua City Council is inviting residents to share their views on potential local government amalgamation as part of the Government’s “Head Start” process. The council is working with neighbouring authorities across the wider Wellington region, including Kāpiti Coast District Council, councils in Wairarapa, and Horowhenua District Council, to ensure communities have input into any future proposals.

The amalgamation work is at an early stage, but Porirua City Council states that the interests, needs, and voices of Porirua residents will be central to the process. Councils participating in the Head Start process have until 9 August to submit amalgamation proposals.

Porirua residents can provide feedback on what matters most to them regarding council merger options until 5pm on Friday 26 June 2026. The consultation aims to ensure local communities help shape any proposals for local government reform in the Wellington region.
