Palmerston residents invited to share feedback on possible council mergers

Palmerston North City Council is inviting residents to provide feedback on possible council mergers following the Government’s “Head Start” announcement. The Government has given councils three months to develop amalgamation plans and has signalled the removal of regional councils from October 2028. Mayor Grant Smith emphasised the importance of community input on the future of local government in the region.

Possible changes could include Palmerston North City Council merging with other councils or parts of councils, sharing more services between councils, boundary changes, and different decision-making processes. Two public drop-in sessions are scheduled at the Central Library on 27 and 29 June.

Residents can submit feedback through the council website by 4pm on 30 June. The council will consider community feedback at a meeting on 5 August before responding to the Government by 9 August. Mayor Smith warned that without local input, central government could impose decisions on the region.
