The Government has delayed its decision on local council merger proposals under the Head Start programme until after the upcoming election. Thames-Coromandel District Council acknowledges that some form of amalgamation remains a reality and has committed to continuing advocacy for its community while maintaining normal service delivery until more information becomes available.
The Council has also released its 2025-6 community satisfaction survey results, which show residents view Thames-Coromandel as a great place to live and are generally satisfied with core services. However, concerns were raised about financial management and cost-effective decision making, areas the Council says it is already working to improve.
A recycling truck fire this week, suspected to have been caused by a battery placed in a kerbside recycling bin, has highlighted the dangers of incorrect waste disposal. The incident required the entire truckload to be sent to landfill instead of being processed. The Council is reminding residents that batteries and items containing batteries must never be placed in kerbside bins but can be dropped off free of charge at the hazardous waste disposal area of local refuse and recycling transfer stations.
Other operational updates include the reopening of Whitianga Wharf following installation of a new pontoon, changes to refuse and recycling transfer station hours with daylight saving beginning on 27 September, and upcoming State Highway works including bridge replacements and rock scaling closures in the Karangahake Gorge.
