Palmerston North Council merger consultation closes soon

Palmerston North City Council is inviting residents to attend drop-in sessions to discuss potential council mergers as part of a broader local government reform process. Mayor Grant Smith and councillors will be available to speak directly with residents at sessions on 27 and 29 June. Nearly 500 people have already provided feedback on the amalgamation proposals, but the consultation remains open until 30 June 2026.

The Government has directed councils to develop amalgamation proposals within a three-month timeframe and has signalled major structural changes, including the removal of regional councils by October 2028. Mayor Smith emphasises that decisions made could have lasting impacts on rates, representation, community facilities, infrastructure investment, and the city’s identity and priorities. The council is seeking a strong local voice in the process to ensure proposals reflect what is best for Palmerston North and the wider region.

Feedback received so far indicates residents are open to potential benefits from greater scale but want this balanced with fair representation and a strong local voice. The community is not necessarily convinced amalgamation will deliver cost savings, but residents are interested in opportunities to improve efficiency and service delivery. The council describes the community response as thoughtful and balanced.

To encourage broader participation, attendees at the drop-in sessions will be entered into a draw to win one of two $100 Prezzy Cards. The council acknowledges this incentive is unusual for community consultation but says the significance of the issue justifies a different approach. Residents can also provide feedback online through the council website until 4pm on 30 June.
