Northland Councils Lead Local Government Reform Plan

Northland councils have welcomed the government’s announcement of a Head Start pathway that gives regions three months to submit proposals for local government reform. Local Government Minister Simon Watts wrote to all councils introducing this voluntary option to fast-track regional reorganisation proposals, rather than waiting for compulsory reforms after the 2028 local body elections.

The pathway supports the government’s Simplifying Local Government proposal announced in November. Whangārei Mayor Ken Couper, chair of the Northland Local Government Reform Elected Member Steering Group, said the announcement enables Northland councils to lead reform that reflects the region’s unique needs.

Far North Mayor Moko Tepania confirmed the pathway allows Northland to continue with work already proposed to the Department of Internal Affairs and Minister Watts. Northland Regional Council Chair Pita Tipene said the approach enables councils to reduce duplication and strengthen decision-making. Far North District Council, Northland Regional Council, and Whangārei District Council have agreed to establish a governance framework, whilst Kaipara District Council will consider its involvement at its May meeting.
