The four Northland councils have acknowledged the Government’s decision to defer consideration of their joint amalgamation proposal submitted in August 2026. Whangārei Mayor Ken Couper, who chairs the Northland Local Government Reform Elected Member Steering Group, said he understands the Government’s decision to take time to ensure a long-lasting solution. The mayors and regional council chair emphasised that local government reform is complex and welcomed the additional time to develop a sustainable solution with strong regional collaboration. They described the reform as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve local government arrangements for Northlanders.
Kaipara District Council Mayor Jonathan Larsen said the pause allows more time to consider the implications of reform and ensure communities have a meaningful voice in shaping future changes. Northland Regional Council Chair Pita Tipene noted that the work undertaken to date has provided valuable insights into creating structures that best serve communities. Far North District Mayor Moko Tepania expressed pride in the collaboration shown by Northland councils despite the tight timeframe.
The councils remain committed to working with central government and Northland communities to ensure any future model delivers enduring benefits for the region. Far North District Council staff will now focus on completing other major workstreams, including the Long Term Plan and transitioning to Northland’s new waters CCO.
