Whanganui in early conversations on council reform

Whanganui District Council has begun early discussions with key partners regarding the Government’s Head Start council reorganisation process. The central government has given councils three months to submit reform proposals or face imposed changes, against a backdrop of financial and infrastructure pressures across New Zealand local government.

Whanganui Mayor Andrew Tripe describes this as one of the most significant potential changes to local government structures since the 1989 reforms. The council has started conversations with Ngā Tāngata Tiaki and neighbouring councils, and plans to engage with the wider community as the work progresses.

Mayor Tripe emphasises that for Whanganui, these discussions must be considered through the lens of Te Awa Tupua and associated relationships and responsibilities. The council supports reform that delivers better outcomes for Whanganui and is committed to shaping its own future rather than waiting for external decisions. Community consultation will be announced through the council’s Facebook page and website.
