Whakatāne District Council has launched an information hub on its website to help residents understand the Government’s recent announcement on local government reform and potential council amalgamations. Mayor Nándor Tánczos stated that the changes represent a significant shift for councils across New Zealand, including the Eastern Bay of Plenty region.
The online resource provides plain-English information about the reform programme, possible structural approaches, and what the changes could mean for Whakatāne District and the wider Bay of Plenty area. The Government has set a relatively short timeframe, requiring initial proposals from councils by 9 August 2026.
While this does not allow for extensive formal consultation, Whakatāne District Council has opened community feedback through its Kōrero Mai engagement portal until 5 June 2026. The Council is encouraging residents to review the information, consider what matters most to their communities, and share their views to help inform the Council’s response to the local government reform process.
