If the central government accepts the proposal, it would progress to a detailed design phase. This next phase would further develop community engagement processes, representation models, governance arrangements, and implementation planning. The proposal represents a significant potential change to local government structure across the Wellington and Wairarapa areas.
The decision now rests with the central government, which will determine whether to accept the proposal and advise on next steps. The councils are awaiting feedback on whether their Head Start amalgamation proposal will proceed to the detailed design phase.
