Waitomo Council Explores Local Government Reform Options

Waitomo District Council and Ōtorohanga District Council are working together through the Government’s Head Start reform pathway to explore future local government arrangements in the King Country region. The collaboration, branded as “Our King Country Future”, allows the councils to shape their own future rather than have changes imposed upon them.

A shared information hub has been established to provide communities with project information, timelines, frequently asked questions, council documents, and updates about the local government reform process.

The name was jointly chosen by the Mayors and Chief Executives of both councils to reflect the collaborative nature of the work. Community engagement sessions are scheduled for June 2026 in Ōtorohanga and Te Kūiti, providing opportunities for residents to discuss the future of local government in their region. Council-specific information, including meeting papers and formal decisions, will continue to be published on respective council websites.
