Both mayors emphasised that taking control of the process would allow their communities to avoid being absorbed into a larger “Super City” type structure decided by government.
Waitomo Mayor John Robertson said the proposal is about exploring how local government could operate more effectively while ensuring local voices remain strong and decisions reflect district needs. Ōtorohanga Mayor Rodney Dow highlighted the strong history of collaboration between the two communities and the importance of shaping a proposal that reflects their unique strengths and identity. Both mayors stressed that community input would be central to developing any proposal.
If the councils proceed and their initial proposal is approved by central government in September 2026, they would need to submit a detailed final proposal by March 2027. A government decision would follow in May 2027, with implementation planned for the 2028 local government elections. This timeline gives the councils limited time to consult with their communities and develop a comprehensive amalgamation proposal.
