Waitaki District Council is hosting four community meetings in June and July 2026 to discuss the Government’s Simplifying Local Government reforms, which propose council amalgamation into unitary authorities. The meetings, featuring panel discussions with the Mayor, Chief Executive, and community representatives, will take place in Otematata, Palmerston, Ngapara, and Oamaru.
The Government has outlined two pathways: the Head Start Pathway, requiring councils to submit amalgamation outline plans by 9 August 2026 for completion by the 2028 local government elections, and a Backstop process for councils not choosing the first option, with amalgamation not occurring until 2031 at the earliest. All New Zealand councils except Auckland are expected to amalgamate with neighbouring councils.
The Mayor has been discussing options with the Otago Mayoral Forum, Canterbury Mayoral Forum, and South Canterbury colleagues, though no decisions have been made. Council is also running a survey closing 14 June 2026 to gather community input for their submission on local government reform.
