Waitaki District Council is progressing with plans to amalgamate with Waimate District Council, Mackenzie District Council, and Timaru District Council under the Government’s Simplifying Local Government reforms. Any successful amalgamations are expected to be in place for the 2028 local elections.
Mayor Tavendale noted that community feedback from Waihemo on amalgamation was mixed, more so than in any other part of Waitaki District. The council does not have a clear direction from the Waihemo community and plans to spend more time understanding their preferred option. Early discussions with government agencies suggest that boundary adjustment conversations can continue after the initial Head Start timeframes, provided an overall direction is indicated.
The current proposal reflects community feedback about the importance of protecting local identity, keeping the Waitaki River catchment together where possible, and working with councils that share similar rural communities, geography, and infrastructure challenges. Mayor Tavendale said the council will continue to listen to communities across Waitaki and work constructively with neighbouring councils to advocate for arrangements that are affordable, sustainable, and locally connected.
