The Thames-Coromandel Simplifying Local Government Working Group has announced the weightings it will use to assess options for local government reform. The weightings prioritise keeping local voices strong at 30 per cent, followed by better value for ratepayers and less bureaucracy and clearer decisions, each at 25 per cent. Better planning for the future and making change practical and achievable are each weighted at 10 per cent.
Mayor Peter Revell said the weightings balance local representation with the need for efficient and affordable governance. The Working Group has considered early survey responses from the community and will verify the weightings align with final survey results.
The weightings are based on five government criteria for assessing reform options. Shortlisted governance options are expected to be released following Council approval, with community input playing a vital role in shaping recommendations for the Thames-Coromandel District Council reform process.
