Tararua District Council local government reform response

Tararua District Council has determined its approach to the Central Government’s local government reform proposal following extensive community consultation. At an Extraordinary Meeting on 10 June, the Council decided to support the community’s preference for Option Six, which involves challenging the proposed reform timeframe and seeking better alternatives to simple amalgamation.

The Council will investigate Option Four, involving potential amalgamation with councils in the Manawatū-Whanganui region, and Option Two, looking south to Wairarapa, including financial modelling for both options. These decisions follow nine community meetings held between 18 and 27 May that attracted more than 550 attendees, plus 409 written and online submissions. No final decision on council merger has been made.

The community expressed concern about the three-month timeframe for such significant local government reform and emphasised the importance of preserving local voice and accountability. Tararua District Council must submit proposals to Central Government by 9 August 2026 under the Head Start process.
