Mayor Macindoe emphasised that Hamilton, as New Zealand’s fourth largest and fastest growing metropolitan city, deserves to have its voice heard and respected in decisions that shape its future. He noted that the city’s needs extend well beyond its boundaries and that there would be benefits in exploring local government reform to address the opportunities and challenges the region faces. The success of Hamilton is intrinsically linked to the success of the wider region, he said.
The decision follows a three-month process during which the council considered a range of reform scenarios and progressively refined them through technical assessment, elected member workshops, community consultation results, regional discussions, and consideration of government requirements. The council’s focus now is on ensuring Hamilton’s interests are strongly represented to shape an outcome that delivers the best possible future for the city and the communities it serves.
