The Government has paused its decision on the Head Start local government reform proposal submitted by Thames-Coromandel District Council, Hauraki District Council, and Matamata-Piako District Council. Ministers Simon Watts and Chris Bishop announced that no council has been selected or ruled out of the Head Start process at this stage, with all proposals now on hold until after the election.
The three councils in the East Waikato region had jointly submitted their amalgamation proposal after signing a Memorandum of Understanding on 4 August 2026. The mayors of all three councils — Peter Revell from Thames-Coromandel, Toby Adams from Hauraki, and Ash Tanner from Matamata-Piako — had formally committed to exploring a council merger through the Head Start process.
Thames-Coromandel District Council acknowledged that while the pause makes the timeframe less clear, amalgamation of some form will eventually be a reality for all of local government in New Zealand. The council has committed to continuing to work in the best interests of the people of Thames-Coromandel District and will keep advocating for their community throughout the reform process.
All council services and activities will continue as usual during this pause. The council has pledged to keep residents informed if and when anything changes and will provide information on how the community can have their say on future developments in the local government reform process.
