Thames-Coromandel District Council has announced the weightings that its Simplifying Local Government Working Group will use to assess local government reform options. The weightings prioritise keeping local voices strong at 30 per cent, better value for ratepayers at 25 per cent, less bureaucracy and clearer decisions at 25 per cent, better planning for the future at 10 per cent, and making change practical and achievable at 10 per cent.
Mayor Peter Revell stated the weightings balance maintaining strong local community voices with the need for efficient and affordable local government. The Working Group considered early responses to a community survey closing on 15 June 2026, with final results informing the assessment of options before further community feedback and a response to Government reform proposals by the 9 August deadline.
Council also paid tribute to aquaculture industry founder Gilbert James, released expressions of interest for district-wide smart water metering covering approximately 8,000 unmetered connections, and introduced a new online boat ramp launch system from 1 July 2026.
