Thames-Coromandel Council Amalgamation Survey Results

Thames-Coromandel District Council has received feedback from more than 1300 residents on local government reform options, with 54 per cent supporting an East Waikato amalgamation. The East Waikato option would see Thames-Coromandel merge with Hauraki District Council, Matamata-Piako District Council, and South Waikato District Council. Over 280 people have also attended Community Board meetings to share their views, with many more submitting comments by email.

The council had shortlisted three reform options from an initial nine under its Simplifying Local Government work programme. The North Bay of Plenty option, involving Tauranga City Council and Western Bay of Plenty District Council, received 34 per cent support, while a single Greater Waikato option attracted 12 per cent. Key themes emerging from feedback include protection of local voice, financial considerations, catchment and watershed management, and concerns about rural versus urban divides and metropolitan dominance over smaller regions.

Thames-Coromandel District Councillors will consider the reform options at their 28 July meeting, with a final decision scheduled for 6 August 2026. Local government proposals for the Head Start programme must be submitted to the Government by 9 August. Acting Mayor John Grant acknowledged the high level of community engagement and said the council would continue to listen to views over the coming weeks.

Separately, the council is conducting community engagement on a spatial plan for the Coromandel Peninsula, asking residents what matters most for the future of their towns. The council is holding public events across the district from 15 July to 12 August to gather feedback on the vision, challenges, and opportunities ahead. This input will help shape a district-wide spatial plan to guide growth, development, and infrastructure needs over the next 30 years.
